What You Need to Know about Computer Storage Devices

Computer files can be stored in four ways: in the HDD, in Media Cards, in a flash disk, or the conventional CD or DVD.

The HDD or Hard Disk Drive stores all the files you have in your computer. It is the main storage device inside the computer. Hence, before buying one, first consider the kind of speed you need to access the storage, how much backup storage you need, your overall storage needs for future files, your security and privacy, and the storage memory. Do you have more text files than music files, video files and photos? The last three can take up a lot of space in your hard drive. Be sure to get enough Gigabytes for your needs. Gigabytes are how hard drives are measured. An appropriate size for a hard drive would be at least 160 Gigabytes for laptops and 250 "Gigs" for Desktops.

Deciding on whether to use an external storage drive over an internal storage drive with your PC? Your decision should be based on your needs and the advantages and disadvantages of each type of drive. They are summarized in the ff. table:

External Storage Drive vs.                       Internal Storage Drive

Media Cards come in different names. There are memory cards, memory sticks, SD cards, mini-SD cards, and a lot more. They are square or rectangular chips that can store up to a few Gigs of computer files. You can choose to have a memory card for convenience of file transfer and sharing. However, a memory card requires a memory card reader to be attached to a desktop PC. Some laptops already have built in memory card readers but not all types of media cards can be attached to these readers.

USB Flash drives, also called flash disks or thumb drives are portable storage devices that can be attached to a computer via a USB port. Flash drives come in different storage capacities, from 128Mb to 4Gb.
